Do you need help with the myriad of college expenses and tuition you will encounter in higher education? You can apply for scholarships to help you cover some or all of the costs. When you think of scholarships you most likely think of academic scholarships for class Valedictorians. Or athletic scholarships for athletes recruited for collegiate sports. While these types of scholarships are more prevalent, they are not the only avenue for earning scholarship money. Just take a look at some of these oddball scholarships available.

Oddball scholarships for golf caddies:

This type of scholarship is offered at many colleges and universities. Upon acceptance of the scholarship, some students are required to work for the local college or university golf course.

Oddball scholarships for descendants of the signers of the Declaration of Independence:

If you can trace your family tree back to a signer of the Declaration of Independence then you are eligible to apply for this scholarship. Family history must be verified. Currently the scholarship is around $1,500 and the student must attend a four year Public university. It looks like it is time to trace your family genealogy and see if you might be in the running for this scholarship.

Oddball scholarships for shooting sports:

Have you participated in the American Legion Shooting Sports program at the state or regional levels? If so, then you can apply for this $250 scholarship.

Oddball scholarships for accordion players:

Oddball scholarships from the Danish Sisterhood of America:

Are you a member of the Danish Sisterhood of America or a child of a member? This will make you eligible. The scholarship is awarded based on academic achievement. The scholarship can be up to $1,000.

No credit is better than bad credit so this condition will not preclude your from getting a loan for study. Before looking at just any student loan, here are a few loans that require absolutely no credit checks:

Federal Stafford Loans, Federal Perkins Loans, some other Government and State-funded loans, Pell Grant and other Government grants, some private grants and scholarships.

Federal Student Loans

Although the amount given is small and may need supplementing with a private type of loan, it is your first step and is an essential part of any Student Loan credit package. Why? Because it is government funded and has the best terms available.

There are two types – Subsidized and Unsubsidized.

Subsidized Loans are for only very financially needy students and the government pays for all your interest payments – not bad eh! – until the student has graduated. You also have a 6 month grace period before paying back the loan.

Unsubsidized Loans are available to all students and are much easier to obtain. The interest rate is still low – around 6-8 percent and also provides a six month grace period.

The Perkins Loan – this loan type is the hardest to get and is for only the most financially needy of students. It therefore has the best terms – a nine month grace period and you have 10 years to pay it back.

As with most federal student loan programs, having no credit shouldn’t be a problem.

Grants and Scholarships

Grants and scholarships are not loans, so of course require no credit checks. Scholarships are normally awarded on merit where as grants are provided more on need – check out the Federal Pell Grant.

A lot of states also have many grants and scholarships so check with your state’s government education fund. There are also many professional societies. If there are a shortage of teachers for example the government will provide more funding to these related professional teachers societies so it is more likely you can get a grant or scholarship from these places.

Alternative and Co-Signer Loans

You need a credit worthy co-signer to get this type of loan – typically your parents will be the co-signers. The downside is that if you cannot make your loan repayments then your co-signer are up for the bill. This can be very awkward and should be considered carefully. There are a few terms between you and the co-signer agreed upon before taking out the loan. For example if you are starting to fall behind you need to let them know and maybe take out a part-time job to help get back up to date. Good credit can lower your repayment amounts.

Keeping away from bad credit

You want to avoid defaulting on your student loans at all cost, this may mean consolidating your loans or changing terms, you could ask about reducing your monthly payment, you will still have to pay it back in the future but it could help you get over a rough financial patch you may find yourself in.

If you are one of the many single mothers trying to find scholarships to get an education, you’ve got a lot to worry about. You have kids and most likely debts to deal with. So, what can you do to accomplish it? As as matter of fact there are lots of options out there for you.

A scholarship is a way for you to get FREE money to go to school and is awarded to you if you meet certain standards.

The money you are receiving can be used to pay for your tuition and feels. Normally it pays for some part of your schooling, but if you find something good you may able to get it all paid for. The best part however, is that you never have to pay it back. Part of this money comes as grants from the federal government, and the rest is paid for buy private organizations.

You can get access to this money if you do well in school, live in a certain area, belong to a certain religion, are an athlete or belong to an ethnic minority.

Learn more about it

There are many ways to find out about these deals. You can contact the State Department for Higher Education, your high school guidance counselor, the financial aid department of the school you would like to attend, the internet or your local library. Other good avenues are your employer, or the company your parents work for. Very few people know about this, but millions each year are allocated for financial aid from these companies.

Find what is the right one for You

Once you start searching, you will find so many deals that it will be hard to sift through them all and decide which is the best one. The solution is to take a little time and check them out, find out what they want from you and what they require for you to qualify. There is a possibility that they will ask for transcripts, essays, letters of recommendations and other prove of your eligibility. So be well prepared before you contact the various deals. Be aware that this isn’t just a paper, it is much more important. This may be a deciding factor on whether you can go back to school or not. So, think about how important it is when you are applying and getting paperwork together so don’t blow it. Another thing: watch out for scams – unfortunately there are lots of them out there.

In each state there are scholarships every year that nobody claims which means there are millions of dollars just sitting around unused. Why couldn’t you use that money to finance your education? And don’t forget: you never have to pay it back.

If you are looking for money for college, keep in mind that there are scams out there. If you get contacted and told that you may be eligible for free money, check it out first. Take a look at the agency offering you the money. Do a little research and see if they are legitimate or just scams. Check them out on the internet and see what kind of information you can find. If they seem suspect, check with your local college if they have ever heard of the institution? If not, stay away. It may be one of the companies trying to take you for a ride.

Is this right for me?

A School or college can be prohibitively expensive. We all have our goals in life and usually what keeps us from achieving them is MONEY, pure and simple. Your future is very important. If there is a chance that you can qualify for free money to help you with school, and you never have to pay it back, why not try it? Get the help and advice you need and get the ball rolling. The future is in your hands!

Finding ways to raise enough money for college is important, whether you are a high school senior or an adult getting ready to go back to college for more education. The cost of college has never been higher than today, and the high prices are making it more difficult to afford going to college.

Today, most jobs require that you have a college education, and a quality education definitely helps people on the road to success. While you may not have money set aside for college and your parents may not be able to make large contributions, scholarships can help you get the money you need for college. There are literally thousands of scholarships out there and it may be quite daunting to know where to begin. Using a scholarships search can help you sift through the available scholarships to find those that are applicable to you.

Get Started Early

One of the most important things to remember when you are doing a scholarship search is that you should start as early as possible. If you wait until the last minute, the number of scholarships available will be much more limited and you will miss out on some great opportunities. Starting the summer before you senior year or the first semester can help you have the time you need to find quality scholarships. Many scholarships require a great deal of paperwork, and some even require that you write essays for them as well, so you want to be sure that you have plenty of time to complete them without rushing.

Online Searches

One of the best places to do a scholarship search is on the internet. A variety of great sites are available that can help you find scholarships, and they make it very easy for you to find them. Some sites allow you to fill out your personal information and then they match you up with scholarships that you are eligible for. While you may only have a few matches to begin with, most of these sites will email you when a new scholarship comes available of they find another scholarship that you may be interested in. If you are not able to search online, then check with your school guidance counselors to see if they can help you to do a scholarship search. Often, these counselors are familiar with and have access to a variety of different scholarship opportunities.

Important Information

When you are doing a scholarship search it is important that you include as much information about yourself as possible. Many of the scholarships are actually only available to those who meet a specific set of requirements. Some may require that you are a male, or some scholarships may require that you are part Indian or part Hispanic in order to be eligible. Other scholarships require that you have at least a “B” average in school or some may require that you are majoring in a science field. When you include your personal information, such as your race, gender, average grades, and intended field of study, you can be better matched to scholarships.

Instead of worrying about how college will be affordable for you, do something about it and start a scholarship search. With so many scholarships out there, no doubt you will be able to win enough money to help you out with college. When you use a scholarship search, it will be quick and easy to find the scholarships available to you so you can have the money you need for a great education.

In this article we’re going to discuss what a student can do in order to get a scholarship to help pay for his college expenses.

One of the myths that needs to be done away with is the one where students believe that there is no way they’re going to get a scholarship because they don’t have good enough grades, their SAT scores aren’t high enough or they just don’t have the smarts.

There are many ways to get scholarships. The traditional way and your main scholarship will be from good grades. There is no getting around that. A student at the top of his or her class with good SAT scores, when accepted to a college will most likely get a full or at least partial scholarship to the school of their choice. Of course a lot of this has to do with the school itself. The more elite schools will have stricter requirements for giving out scholarships. For example, a student applying to a county college may get a full scholarship for being number one or two in the class while that same student when applying to an Ivy League school may only get a partial scholarship or none at all. But again, good grades and SAT scores are only part of the equation.

The next part of the equation is economic need. There are many organizations who provide funds for students to go to school who simply can’t afford it. The main organization for this is FAFSA. A student’s first step in financing their education should be to file an application for financial aid with FAFSA. You can get an application for this at any college office or fill one out online. After filing, their program will immediately tell you, based on your reported income, how much money you will be expected to pay towards your child’s education. For example, if your child is going to a school that is going to cost $30,000 a year and the FAFSA application says you are responsible for $20,000 then that means you should be getting $10,000 in aid from the government after you have submitted the paperwork to them with your school expenses.

Does that mean you’re stuck with paying $20,000 for your kid’s education? Not at all. Even if the college itself doesn’t give your child any money, there are plenty of other places to get funds from.

Go to your local library or do an online search. You will find literally hundreds of private organizations that offer scholarships for students. Each one has different requirements but they all usually fall into one of several criteria.

The first criteria is that some of these organizations offer scholarships based on grades and SAT scores. In these cases, simply submit this information to the organization. They will get back to you and let you know if you’re going to get a scholarship.

Some organizations base scholarships on essays. They pick out the students who wrote the best essays and these are the ones who get scholarships. There may be three scholarship awards for these essay contests.

Then there are organizations that offer scholarships based on some affiliation that you have such as if you had a family member who fought in a foreign war. Then there are organizations like the Masons, Elks and Rotary, that offer scholarships if a family member is part of their organization. Most of these organizations are districted and usually give out only one or two scholarships per district.

So, as you can see, there are more ways for your kid to get money for college besides just getting good grades. But they do help.

——————————————————-

There are various sources of scholarship money awarded to students each year – probably more than you realize. The trick in finding these opportunities is understanding each type of scholarship and whether you’re eligible for them. While wading through countless resources may seem a daunting task, if you’re serious about finding legitimate ways to fund your college education, the task of learning about various opportunities can be well worth it.

College Scholarships

Many colleges offer monetary awards for their specific college. If you know which schools you’d like to attend, it may be to your benefit to find out whether those schools offer school-specific scholarships as part of your financial aid package. Schools that do offer specific scholarships to students of their college typically include requirements the student must maintain in order to remain eligible for the money.

For example, many colleges require students receiving scholarship money from them to maintain a certain GPA, pursue a defined course of study, or other specific academic requirements. Not every college offers school-specific scholarship awards however, so it’s a good idea to do your research beforehand so you won’t end up disappointed.

Athletic Scholarships

These types of scholarships seem to be less talked about than the majority of monetary awards, but that doesn’t necessarily make them any less viable. It used to be that students who didn’t excel academically, but were amazing when it came to athletics, believed they could fund their college education on an athletic scholarship alone.

These days however, that’s simply not the case. It’s not impossible to receive an athletic scholarship for your hard work on the field, but these scholarship awards are highly competitive. If you excel athletically, it’s a good idea to research the school or schools you’re interested in attending to see if they offer athletic scholarships to promising athletes. You’ll also want to look into the process of applying for an athletic scholarship so you know what’s involved.

Academic Scholarships

These awards are often college-specific as well, and are awarded to outstanding students who excel academically. Because they are merit-based, academic scholarships are also highly competitive. While you may have to apply separately for these types of awards, oftentimes an academic scholarship is included with your financial aid package from the school if you show academic excellence in one field or another.

Different departments of various colleges may also have specific scholarships available to students pursuing a specific course of study within that department. If you already know what you plan to major in, it would be a good idea to contact the school you’re interested in attending and see if they offer scholarships specific to students in your course of study.

Private Organizations

These organizations are not affiliated with any specific school, and awards from these types range from small monetary awards to $20,000 or more depending on the specific organization. These scholarships require a good deal of research to determine whether the opportunity is legitimate, and may have specific requirements for applying.

Various corporations may offer scholarships to students who are interested in pursuing a major within that specific business’ field. These scholarships may be a bit difficult to find, but they are out there. Check with your parents’ employers to see if they offer any sort of scholarship program to prospective students. These scholarships often have less competition, so your chances of obtaining funding this way are greater than they would be otherwise.

Religious groups oftentimes offer scholarships to students who are involved with the church or specific religious organization. If you belong to a religious group, check to see if they offer monetary awards for people interested in attending college. Not every religious organization offers these awards, but you may be surprised at what you discover.

High schools almost always have scholarship opportunities available to students. Check with your guidance counselor and find out which scholarships you may be eligible for. The sooner you begin researching your various scholarship options, the better chances you’ll have of securing funding for at least a portion of your college education.

You may also considering checking with your local Chamber of Commerce for various scholarship opportunities that may be available within your community. They’ll have plenty of information available about the different business’ that may offer scholarships, and will be able to direct you to the appropriate source for your inquiry.

Finally, there are still many other organizations that offer scholarships to students from all walks of life. The “other” category is where you’re apt to find the most opportunities available. Check online at reputable scholarship websites to see if you’re eligible for any, and what requirements these groups may have. You never know what you may find once you start researching your various options.

Of course, the Military is always an excellent option for students who are interested in receiving scholarship money for college. Of course, Military scholarships require students to perform an active tour of duty, and you MUST be willing and able to comply with the requirements in order to receive your scholarship. Most branches will even pay your entire college tuition, depending on which branch you serve and what you’re planning to study. If serving in the Military coincides with your educational goals, you may want to check out which scholarships are available and the requirements for obtaining one. However, be sure that you’re going to be able to follow through with the requirements, because once you’re in – you’re in.

There are countless ways to help cover the costs of your college education, and various scholarship opportunities await you. All you need to do is put in a bit of time and effort to locate those scholarship opportunities that you’re eligible for, and make sure you comply with the requirements exactly. Applying for college is a daunting task, but if you are serious about furthering your education and need help covering the costs, scholarships are a viable way of earning your degree without having to go broke doing it.

My daughter is a Junior at St John’s University in New York City. I just checked her financial aid record and discovered that so far, it has cost over $82,000 to attend.

$82,000 THOUSAND DOLLARS!

$82,012.36 to be exact. And she still has at least one more year to go. The tuition is $24,400 per year (and increasing).

That adds up to about $72,000 over 3 years – (according to my calculations). So where did the other $10,000 come from?

FEES… New Student Fee, University General Fee, Student Activity Fee, Late Payment Fee, ID Card Replacement Fee, A/R Interest (what’s that?).

And this doesn’t even include books (which average about a hundred bucks each), food, transportation or room and board. She doesn’t even live on campus.

According to St John’s University – the cost of attendance for the 2007-2008 Academic Aid Year will be:

Books and Supplies…………….. $1,000.00
Fees………………………………… $640.00
Home Maintenance………………. $2,700.00
Personal Expenses………………. $1,800.00
Transportation……………………. $1,100.00
Tuition……………………………… $26,200.00

Total: ……………… A Whopping $33,440.00

Damn!

Her grades are pretty good… All A’s and a couple B’s. You’d think she could get some grants and scholarship money since she’s a good student. Well, she can.

But not $33,440.00 worth.

Which means the balance will have to come from loans. By the time she graduates, she AND I, will be up to our eyeballs in student loans and debt.

Now I don’t know about you, but it took me years and years to pay off my own student loans. Now I have to start all over again by taking out Parent Plus Loans to help pay for my daughter’s education.

So, what’s the solution? The solution is MORE SCHOLARSHIPS. More Scholarships = Less Loans.

College is more expensive than ever. The scholarships you win can change your life forever.

Example… If you can pull off a $5,000 scholarship, that’s $5,000 less in student loans you have to take out. A $5,000 student loan means 10 YEARS of paying about $100 a month… EVERY MONTH!

Instead of paying that money to the government in the form of student loan repayment, you could save about $12,000 or so for your retirement.

Assuming a modest 8 percent rate of appreciation, that $12,000 can easily grow to over $120,000 in 30 years.

In 40 years, it’ll grow to over $260,000!

That’s a serious life style change. And that’s just for a small $5,000 scholarship. Just imagine what a $10,000, $20,000 or more in scholarships can do for your lifestyle.

Billion$ of dollars are available in scholarship money.

But the irony is that most students (and their parents) don’t know where, and more importantly, HOW to apply for scholarship money. Do your due diligence. Money is available for your education.

Just A.S.K.

Ask and Ye shall receive. Seek and Ye shall find. Knock an it shall be opened unto you.

Whether the US economy slows down or perks up in the near or long term, what is now widely considered as one holding great promise is the demand for qualified nurses in the country for at least the coming 6 years. There is however the fear of growing shortage of good nursing teachers, which means that the gulf between availability of nursing jobs and that of qualified nurses is likely to grow bigger in the years to come.

A situation such as this holds promise for serious students who wish to pursue a career in nursing. Even nurses, who have few years of experience behind them, may find it convenient and timely to enhance their qualifications to aim for higher career goals.

The good news for students is that there are many scholarships available to study courses in nursing. It is advisable however, that students explore different avenues for funding their studies before zeroing in on likely choices. More often than not, sourcing funds for a nursing degree is a multi-step process that may vary from one program to another, which in turn calls for diligence and ability to work out the best deal from amongst various options available. For example, it may be so that some scholarships cover only a part of educational cost, while others meet the entire educational cost but with conditions to be fulfilled.

In the narration that follows, we have tried to provide some information for sourcing scholarships for studying nursing courses.

1. BHPR Nursing Scholarship This ought to be the first place for a prospective student looking for scholarship. Bureau of Health Professions under the auspices of US Department of Health and Human Services invites applications for its Nursing Scholarship Program (NSP) every year to award scholarships to individuals for attendance at schools of nursing. The scholarship meets payment for tuition, fees, other reasonable educational costs, and a monthly support stipend. Students availing the scholarship will have to agree to serve a minimum of 2 years of full-time clinical service (or an equivalent part-time commitment, as approved by the NSP) at a health care facility with a critical shortage of nurses.

2. AHCA’s Long Term Care Nursing Scholarships AHCA (American Health Care Association) provides scholarships under a fund established in 1989 to meet the nation’s nurse shortage and attract qualified nurses to the long term care field. Since inception, Washington DC based AHCA’s affiliate, the National Foundation for Long Term Health Care (NFLTHC) has awarded scholarships to more than 331 nursing students — totaling more than $165,000 in scholarship grants. This year, it proposes to award up to 20 scholarships of $500 each to deserving undergraduate students, who enroll in RN and LPN programs, and also to graduate students.

3. NBNA Scholarship Program The National Black Nurses Association (NBNA) provides scholarships as a means for funding continuing education. Its aim is to enable nurses to grow their ability and better contribute their talents to the health and healthcare of its communities. The scholarships usually range from $500 to $2000.

4. AACN Education Center The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) has listed a large number of resources regarding availability of scholarships including its own CampusRN / AACN Scholarship Fund.

5. Honor Society of Nursing Another good source to obtain information on availability of scholarships can be had from the list compiled and maintained by Sigma Theta Tau International. Its compilation covers the categories ‘General’, ‘Minorities’ and ‘Disadvantaged Students’.

6. Discover Nursing Discover Nursing provides a searchable database of scholarships available for nursing students. Backed by Johnson & Johnson Health Care Systems, the exhaustive database can be searched using various combinations of 4 search criteria.

Apart from above, many scholarship programs are offered by private, non-profit organizations in different states. In addition, universities also provide scholarship funds that they manage based on donations given by individuals. An example is that of New Pitt Nursing Scholarship to commemorate life of Lieutenant Colonel Julia Minno, vide which University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing awards scholarship each year to one undergraduate student from Western Pennsylvania.

As you consider how to pay for college, the very first place to start is with college grants and scholarships. Unlike student loans, grants and scholarships generally do not have to be repaid. There are billions of dollars of grants and scholarships available from hundreds of thousands of organizations the key is doing your research and starting early.

Grants are based on a combination of financial need, and in some cases, academic performance. For example, the Federal Pell Grant offers up to $4,050 (for the 2006-07 school year) depending on your financial need and the cost of attendance at your school. Applying for the Pell Grant and other federal grants is done through the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or the FAFSA, which is a free financial aid form. Your FAFSA results, called the Student Aid Report (SAR), will inform you if you’re eligible for a Pell Grant, and for how much. Other grants controlled by the FAFSA include the Supplementary Educational Opportunity Grant, the National SMART Grant, and the Academic Competitiveness Grant.

College scholarships are another source of funds for education that don’t have to be repaid. They are typically offered to students who meet specific requirements, and are typically funded by private benefactors. Though many scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic merit or financial need, not all are. Some scholarships are random drawings, while others have requirements designed to focus on improving access to specific demographics, like minorities or certain fields of study.

There are millions of need- and merit-based scholarships worth over $10 billion. There are many websites listing scholarships – StudentScholarshipSearch.com currently has over $7 billion scholarships available for visitors. In addition to the Internet, meet with your high school guidance counselor who may have a list of local scholarship opportunities.

It is important to research these student scholarships early since many require an application and/or interview. Although you will not apply for college until you are a senior in high school, start to research scholarships in your sophomore or junior year. This will allow you to identify potential scholarships and give you time to meet all the qualification criteria. Be as specific as possible – the more targeted your search, the less competition you will have from other applicants and the more likely you are to stand-out to the organization providing the scholarship. For more details about how to search effectively, read the free Scholarship Search Secrets e-Book available at StudentScholarshipSearch.com.

Apply for as many college scholarships as possible – there is no limit and every dollar of scholarship funds you accrue will limit your need of student loans. Many scholarships require you to submit an application and/or participate in an interview, so be sure you qualify for the scholarship before applying. Try to set a specific time each week to apply for at least two scholarships – every Sunday afternoon, for example. In a year’s time, you will have applied for over 100 scholarships.

Another key fact often overlooked is that in the end, what matters most is how much scholarship money you have been awarded, whether it comes from a single scholarship for $1,000, or 10 scholarships for $100 each. Apply for large and small scholarships alike; the larger the scholarship, the more competition there likely is for it, so you may find in your search that applying for many smaller scholarships will improve your chances of being awarded money.

One last word of caution – be sure to avoid scholarship scams. Typical signs of scholarship scams include asking for very detailed personal information, such as a Social Security number or date of birth. Any scholarship award that asks you to pay money of any dollar amount is likely not legitimate. Awards which require you to give any kind of financial information such as bank account numbers or credit card numbers are almost certainly scams. Receiving a notice that you’re a finalist in a scholarship you never applied for is almost certainly a scam. Generally speaking, scholarship search services, while not necessarily scams, don’t offer value above and beyond what a search engine like Google can provide, so it’s usually not worth paying for them. Above all else, trust your gut instincts – if something feels like a scam, it probably is.
