Woodland Hills, CA, United States (AHN) – A suspected car burglar shot an LAPD officer near a high school in Woodland Hills Wednesday prompting the agency to send 350 men to hunt the gunman and the lockdown of several schools in the area as a precaution.
Jeff Stenroos, 30, suffered only chest bruises as his bullet-proof vest protected him from the bullet fired by a 40-year-old white man that he confronted while breaking into some cars near the El Camino Real High School.
A good Samaritan helped Stenroos radio for help and backup in his patrol car while the gunman escaped and remains at large.
The LAPD cordoned an area from Platt Avenue to the Ventura (101) Freeway to search the shooter described as having a long brown hair pulled into a pony tail, gray sideburns and wearing a bomber jacket and blue jeans.
The Los Angeles Unified School District ordered a lockdown of the El Camino Real High School and the nearby Hale Middle School and the elementary schools of Welby Way, Woodlake, Calabash, Pomelo, Haynes and Lockhurst.
