Military college scholarships aid people who are serving, or who have served, in the military and help them achieve their educational goals. A scholarship can provide a financial solution to affording a college education. These military-specific benefits can save people from the hassle of accumulating financial debt and are considered a major benefit of being in the military.

A military college scholarship is granted to people who are currently serving in the military or retired from service, as well as to their spouses and dependents. These benefits are separate from military tuition assistance, which provides education benefits solely to active duty military service members. They are available in the form of service specific scholarships, college funds and other education programs.

A good question would be, “What sets a military college scholarship apart from other scholarships?” The answer is that a majority of regular scholarships are either financial or merit-based as opposed to a very general criterion for military college scholarships. Military college scholarships provide money to cover tuition costs and typically come in the form of direct cash, tuition payments, vouchers and waivers.

Here are some examples of military college scholarships:

The Army College Fund (ACF) – The ACF is also known as a MGIB Kicker, and is available to those who sign up for the GI Bill. If a candidate is a high school graduate, scores a 50 or better on the ASVAB, and qualifies for certain Army jobs or specialties, they can get more than $20,000 in addition to their GI Bill money for their education upon enlistment.

The Navy Advanced Education Voucher Program (AEV) – The AEV Program is aimed at superior performers who have the potential for continued upward mobility, and specifically targets assistance for post secondary, Navy-relevant degree programs. AEV for baccalaureate degree completion will cover 100 percent of tuition, books and related fees. Each participant will be limited to 6,700 dollars per year for a maximum of 36 months from the date of Enrollment.

General Henry H. Arnold Education Grant Programs – Provides grants to selected sons and daughters of active duty, Title 10 AGR/Reserve, Title 32 AGR performing full-time active duty, retired, retired reserve and deceased Air Force members; spouses (stateside) of active duty members and Title 10 AGR/Reservists; and surviving spouses of deceased personnel for their undergraduate studies.

Navy (Marine Option) Reserve Officer Training Corps (NROTC) Scholarship –
The NROTC Program was established to educate and train qualified young men and women for service as commissioned officers in the Marine Corps Reserve. As the largest single source of Marine Corps officers, the NROTC Scholarship Program prepares young men and women for leadership and management positions in the Marine Corps.

Military Spouse Scholarships – These military college scholarships provide military spouses with the opportunity to get a college education with little or no out-of-pocket costs. The types and amounts of scholarships vary based on the school that is offering them, but they are all designed to recognize the sacrifices that military spouses make and provide them with the means to further their education.

Each branch may be different in its available military college scholarships, but all of them provide some type of assistance to today’s service members, veterans and their families. They are an ideal way to cover the costs of getting a college education. Paying for school is not easy, but with the assistance of a scholarship program, service members or veterans can cover their education costs and provide a solid foundation for their future.
