Maputo, Mozambique (AHN) – At least three Somali immigrants have been shot and killed by border guards in Mozambique.

The men were among nine traveling on foot tthrough Tanzania headed to South Africa when they were sprayed by bullets from Mozambican forces, according to a member of the group.

In an interview with Shabelle, a radio station based in Mogadishu, Bashi Omar Mohammed, one of the survivors of the incident, said that the Somali immigrants were sprayed with bullets by Mozambique forces.

“We don’t know why they fired us, but we think they suspected us, because we are on our way to cross the border between Tanzania and Mozambique by foot and then to South Africa,” Bashi Omar Mohammed told Shabelle, a radio station based in Mogadishu.

He said the incident took place Friday night and that there were no other injuries.

Mohammed said the surviving men were arrested, but were later released after paying bribes. The remains of the dead Somalis were buried at the scene of the shooting Saturday morning.

“Mozambique is a key passage for fleeing African migrants, who seek a better life in South Africa than they had in their countries,” he added.

The Mozambique government has not released any statement about the incident.
